Biointerphases – a new OA journal

The Biointerphases journal provides an interdisciplinary platform for scientific exchange among the biology, chemistry, physics, and materials sciences communities. It offers a discussion forum for rapid dissemination of scientific theories, results, and interpretations. Biointerphases serves as a global vehicle for the biomaterials interface community as well as a platform that encourages dialog between scientists and the public with respect to cogent policy issues.

Suggestions from the University Libraries Committee for the Faculty Senate Resolution on Scholarly Publishing

WHEREAS the University of Iowa’s longstanding commitment to the free and open
publication, presentation and discussion of research advances the interests of the scholarly community, the faculty individually, and the public, and

WHEREAS the costs of scholarly journals are continually rising at rates greater than the rate of inflation and higher than the rate of University budget increases, and

WHEREAS the activities of these publishers directly depend upon the continued participation of faculty at [Iowa] and similar institutions acting as editors, reviewers, and authors, and

WHEREAS a lasting solution to this problem requires not only interim measures but also a long range plan, and

WHEREAS publication in open access journals and repositories is an increasingly effective option for scholarly communication,

MIT's Envisioning Science Project, home for the Image and Meaning Workshop Series, has joined forces with Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society and Harvard's Initiative in Innovative Computing (IIC) to present a series of regional workshops to continue our conversations from June 2005, both face-to-face and virtually, and also to expand our community with regional collaborations.

BioMed Central launches Biology Direct
A new open access journal from Eugene Koonin, Laura Landweber and David Lipman

BioMed Central is pleased to announce the launch of Biology Direct, a new online open access journal with a novel system of peer review. Biology Direct will operate completely open peer review, with named peer reviewers' reports published alongside each article. The journal also takes the innovative step of requiring that the author approach Biology Direct Editorial Board members directly to review the manuscript.

The journal, available online at www.biology-direct.com, launches with publications in the fields of Systems Biology, Computational Biology, and Evolutionary Biology, with an Immunology section to follow soon. Biology Direct considers original research articles, hypotheses, and reviews and will eventually cover the full spectrum of biology. [more]
